Mounjaro Nausea and Side Effects: What to Eat

· Emily Dixon

Selective Nutrition

Side effects such as nausea, reflux, constipation and tiredness are common in the early weeks of GLP-1 medication and often after a dose increase. They usually ease with time, and what you eat can make a real difference in the meantime.

Important: if you have severe or persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain, signs of dehydration or anything that worries you, contact your prescriber, GP or NHS 111.

Nausea

  • Eat smaller portions, more slowly, and stop at the first sign of fullness
  • Choose plain, lower-fat foods when you feel queasy: toast, crackers, rice, potatoes, plain yoghurt, soup
  • Go easy on greasy, fried and very rich food
  • Sip fluids between meals rather than drinking a lot with food
  • Cold foods and drinks can be easier than hot ones
  • Ginger or peppermint tea helps some people
  • Do not lie down straight after eating

Reflux and indigestion

  • Keep evening meals small and finish two to three hours before bed
  • Notice your own triggers: common ones include spicy food, fizzy drinks, alcohol, coffee and chocolate
  • Raising the head of your bed slightly can help at night

Constipation

Slower digestion can mean slower bowels. Build fibre up gradually and drink plenty alongside it. Our full guide covers this: constipation on GLP-1: fibre and fluids that help.

Diarrhoea

  • Keep fluids up, little and often
  • Eat simple, plain foods until things settle
  • Be cautious with very fatty food, artificial sweeteners and large amounts of caffeine

Tiredness and low energy

Often this comes down to simply not eating or drinking enough. Make sure you are getting protein at each meal, some carbohydrate for energy, and enough fluid. Skipping meals because you are not hungry can leave you flat by the afternoon.

Keep a short diary

For a week, jot down what you ate, when, and how you felt. Patterns usually jump out quickly and help you and your prescriber decide what to change.

If side effects are making it hard to eat well, nutrition support can help. Learn about GLP-1 support with Emily, or read what to eat on Mounjaro.
