Coming Off Mounjaro or Wegovy: How to Stop the Weight Coming Back

· Emily Dixon

Table

One of the biggest worries I hear is: “What happens when I stop?” It is a fair question. Studies of people coming off GLP-1 medication have found that many regain a large part of the weight they lost within a year. Appetite returns, and old habits are waiting.

That is not a reason to avoid the medication. It is a reason to use your time on it well, and to plan the exit as carefully as the start.

Start planning months before you stop

Talk to your prescriber about when and how to stop or reduce your dose. While you are still on treatment, practise the habits you will need afterwards: regular meals, protein at each one, plenty of vegetables, and portions that leave you comfortably satisfied.

Expect your appetite to return

When the medication wears off, hunger and food thoughts usually come back. That is biology, not weakness. Knowing it is coming means you can prepare instead of panicking.

  • Keep protein and fibre high: they are the most filling foods you can eat
  • Eat regular meals so you are not arriving at dinner starving
  • Keep easy, healthy options in the house and fewer trigger foods
  • Plan for weekends, holidays and stressful weeks

Protect your muscle

Muscle helps your body use energy and control blood sugar. People who kept up strength training and protein while on treatment are in a far stronger position when they stop. See how to protect your muscle on GLP-1.

Keep moving every day

Regular activity is one of the most consistent habits among people who keep weight off long term. Walking counts. So does gardening, dancing and taking the stairs.

Weigh in, but kindly

A regular check (weekly works for many people) helps you spot a creep early, when it is easy to correct. Agree in advance what you will do if your weight rises by a set amount, so it is a plan, not a panic.

Look after sleep and stress

Poor sleep and high stress both push appetite up. They are part of weight management, not a side issue.

Get support for the transition

The months after stopping are when support counts most. Working with a nutritionist gives you a personal plan, someone to check in with, and a way to adjust before small changes become big ones.
