Alcohol on Mounjaro and Wegovy: What You Should Know

· Emily Dixon

Selective Nutrition

“Can I still have a glass of wine?” is one of the questions I am asked most. There is no one answer for everyone, and you should always check with your prescriber, particularly if you have diabetes, take other medication or have a history of pancreatitis or liver problems. But here is what is worth knowing.

Many people find they want less

A lot of people on GLP-1 medication notice they simply fancy alcohol less, or that one drink feels like plenty. That can be a welcome change.

It can make side effects worse

Alcohol can irritate the stomach and worsen nausea, reflux and an upset tummy, all of which are already common on GLP-1 medication. Some people also find they feel the effects of alcohol more quickly when eating less.

It adds up, and it lowers your guard

Alcohol carries calories without nutrients, and it often leads to snacking or less careful food choices. When your appetite is small, drinks can easily crowd out the protein and nutrients your body needs.

If you do drink

  • Never drink on an empty stomach. Eat a meal with protein first.
  • Go slowly and alternate with water.
  • Choose smaller measures and lower-strength options.
  • Avoid sugary mixers and cocktails, which can upset the stomach.
  • Stay within UK low-risk guidance of no more than 14 units a week, spread over several days with drink-free days.
  • Notice how you feel and cut back if it makes side effects worse.

If you have diabetes

Alcohol can affect blood sugar, especially if you take insulin or certain other diabetes medicines alongside GLP-1 treatment. Speak to your diabetes team about what is safe for you.
