How Much Protein Do You Need on GLP-1 Medication?

· Emily Dixon

If there is one nutrient to focus on while taking GLP-1 medication, it is protein. It helps protect your muscle, keeps you full and supports recovery. Yet with a much smaller appetite, it is often the first thing people miss.

How much?

Needs vary with your size, age, activity and health, so a personal target is always best. As a practical starting point, many people do well with a palm-sized portion of protein at every meal, which for most adults is roughly 20 to 30 grams. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, check with your doctor before increasing protein.

What 20 to 30 grams looks like

  • A small chicken breast or a fillet of fish
  • Three eggs, or two eggs with a pot of Greek yoghurt
  • A 200g pot of Greek yoghurt or skyr
  • Half a block of firm tofu
  • A generous portion of cottage cheese
  • A large bowl of lentil or bean chilli

Easy ways to fit it in with a small appetite

  • Protein first: eat it before the rest of your plate
  • Upgrade your breakfast: swap toast and jam for eggs, or cereal for yoghurt with seeds
  • Snack smart: a boiled egg, a cheese stick, edamame or a glass of milk
  • Add it in: stir lentils into soups, beans into salads, yoghurt into smoothies
  • Soups and smoothies can be easier on days when solid food feels hard

Do you need protein shakes?

Not necessarily. Real food comes with fibre, vitamins and minerals that shakes may lack. But on days when you genuinely cannot eat much, a good-quality shake can help fill the gap. Check the label for added sugar.

Do not forget the rest of the plate

Protein matters most, but vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and healthy fats keep your gut happy, prevent constipation and give you energy. Balance still wins.
