What to Eat on Mounjaro: A Nutritionist’s Guide

· Emily Dixon

Clinic

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) turn the volume down on hunger. For many people that is the first time in years that food stops shouting at them. But a smaller appetite brings a new problem: when you are only eating half as much, every mouthful has to work harder.

As a registered nutritionist, the most common thing I see is not people eating too much on GLP-1 medication. It is people eating too little of the right things, feeling tired and flat, and losing muscle along with fat. Here is how to get it right.

1. Build every meal around protein

Protein helps protect your muscle while you lose weight, keeps you fuller for longer and supports your skin, hair and immune system. On a reduced appetite it is the first thing to fall away, so put it on the plate first.

  • Eggs, Greek yoghurt, skyr or cottage cheese at breakfast
  • Chicken, turkey, fish, tofu, tempeh, beans or lentils at lunch and dinner
  • A protein-rich snack if you cannot manage a full meal: a yoghurt pot, a boiled egg, a small handful of edamame

A simple rule: eat the protein on your plate first, then the vegetables, then the carbohydrates. If you fill up early, you have still got what matters most.

2. Go small and often

Large meals are a common trigger for nausea and reflux on GLP-1 medication because food leaves the stomach more slowly. Three small meals and one or two planned snacks usually feel better than two big ones. Eat slowly, put your fork down between bites and stop at the first sign of fullness.

3. Keep fibre and fluids up

Constipation is one of the most common side effects. Aim for vegetables or fruit at every meal, choose wholegrain versions where you can, and add beans, lentils, oats, chia or ground flaxseed. Drink steadily through the day, because fibre without fluid can make things worse.

4. Go easy on rich, fatty and very sugary foods

Many people find greasy, fried or very rich food sits heavily and brings on nausea. Very sugary foods and drinks can also make you feel unwell. You do not need to ban anything, but notice what your body is telling you.

5. Do not forget the micronutrients

Eating less means fewer vitamins and minerals coming in. A colourful plate helps: leafy greens, peppers, berries, tomatoes, carrots. Think about iron, calcium, vitamin D and B12 in particular, and talk to your GP or a nutritionist if you are worried you are falling short.

6. Strength train if you can

Food protects muscle; resistance exercise builds it. Two sessions a week of anything that challenges your muscles (weights, resistance bands, Pilates, even bodyweight squats at home) makes a real difference to how you look and feel at the end of your journey. See our guide to protecting your muscle on GLP-1.

7. Plan for life after the injections

Medication works while you take it. The habits you build alongside it are what keep the results. Use this time to learn what a satisfying, balanced plate looks like for you, so you are ready if and when you come off. Read more in coming off Mounjaro: how to stop the weight coming back.
